Workshops
Over Covid I had the opportunity to develop and run Zoom workshops that explore different aspects of Ottawa’s History. Each workshop is divided with a 25-35 minutes zoom slide shows and then with a 10-15 group discussion afterwards.

Grandpa Jack: The British Home Children
This workshop will explore the history of British ‘Home Children’ through the memories of one. Between 1869 and 1932, over 100,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada to be placed with rural families. Often these children were used as a source of labour and rarely fit into their new families. My Grandfather, Jack, came to Canada in 1927 as a Home Child and in 2006 he recorded those memories on tape.
Summers and Streetcars at Britannia Beach
Britannia is now fully encircled by the city that once considered it a remote cottage community. The beach was once home to a wooden pier, amusement park, and much more all connected to Ottawa through its streetcar system. This workshop will explore what summers used to look like at Britannia Beach in Ottawa’s west end.
Camp Woolsey: Memories of Ottawa’s Girl Guide Camp
For over 80 years the Ottawa Girl Guides have made Camp Woolsey their weekend and summer home. Located along the Ottawa River, the camp has witnessed a lifetime of campers’ memories and adventures, everything from royal visits to trouble with canvas tents. In the spring of 2017, the decision was made to close and sell off all the Ontario Girl Guide Camps. Come and explore the camp’s history through memorabilia, photos and stories.
